  • Description

The thousands of photographs Roman Vishniac took of Jews and Jewish life as he traversed Eastern Europe between 1935 and 1938 are iconic. Together they provide a visual record of the communities and rich cultural history tragically lost in the Holocaust. And yet, a retrospective film about Vishniac’s life and work has never been produced—until now. Seeing an opportunity to tell an all-too relevant story about a complicated artist and the power of art to draw public attention to injustice, director Laura Bialis’ Vishniac explores Vishniac’s career, his photographs, and his dramatic life story for broad audiences. The film, currently in post-production, was made with the full cooperation of Vishniac’s daughter.
